Leptospirosis- Information on the new vaccine
UPDATE NOVEMBER 2024 NEW LEPTOSPIROSIS VACCINATION (LEPTO 2) AVAILABLE
New Lepto 2 vaccination
We are pleased to announce that the Lepto 2 (Leptospirosis) vaccine is now available. This new vaccine offers protection against 4 serovars (strains) of Lepto, including Lepto Australis, the most concerning serovar of Lepto for dogs in Darwin. We highly recommend that all dogs receive this new vaccine.
• Dogs will need two vaccines, administered 4 weeks apart
If your dog has recently received the Lepto C2i vaccination (the best protection we had available over the past 6-7 months), they can still receive the new Lepto 2 vaccination for optimal protection (they will need a second booster four weeks later) or you may choose to wait and start this at a later date.
If you have any further questions or would like to book over the phone, call our friendly staff on 8948 0056.
What is Leptospirosis?
Leptospirosis is bacterial infection caused by the spirochete Leptospira, that can infect almost all mammals, including dogs. It is a zoonotic disease, meaning that it can be passed from animals to humans.
Rodents and wildlife are the main carriers of this disease, and it is shed in their urine, contaminating environments. Dogs can be exposed via contact with contaminated water or soil, or by direct contact with the animal.
Unfortunately, it can cause kidney and liver failure in dogs, and can be fatal, so protection is important.
